Ukraine and the October coup of 1917: from Bolshevik state capitalism to Putin's rashism

ZDOROV Andrii

On the anniversary of the Bolshevik seizure of power, Andriy Zdorov argues that the Russian and Ukrainian revolutions of 1917–1921, despite their socialist slogans, were bourgeois revolutions consciously modelled on France after 1789. The Bolsheviks acted as Jacobins; the Soviet Union became a state-capitalist empire ruled by the nomenklatura, which modernised society by the methods of primitive accumulation at the cost of the Holodomor and mass repression, while conceding formal statehood (…)

Ukraine, Galicia and 1917: “A word to comrades on the Russian revolution”

ZDOROV Andrii

Andriy Zdorov reads the upheaval of 1917–1921 in the former Russian Empire as an initially bourgeois revolution, whch produced a state capitalist empire ruled by the nomenklatura. Bolsheviks and Ukrainian socialists alike, he argues, reproduced the model and the vocabulary of France in 1789–1799; the Bolsheviks played the Jacobins, and their dictatorship produced a state-capitalist empire which modernised Ukraine at the cost of the Holodomor and mass repression. But also conceded Ukraine (…)

Taiwan: The Country That Has Forgotten Joshua Wong

HIOE Brian

THE SENTENCING of Hong Kong political activist Joshua Wong to an additional ten years in prison, on top of the time that he was already serving, should be a stark warning to Taiwan of the future that it faces if it acquiesces to Chinese political control. Still, one notes that many in Taiwan have forgotten the lessons of Hong Kong.

Wong's extra ten years in jail were on the basis of alleged collusion with foreign forces. Wong has already spent six (…)

The French crisis: A government on the ropes - The movement continues; the murder in Trappes serves as a reminder of the urgent need to defeat the National Rally

CREMIEUX Léon

In the midst of a period of popular mobilization in France, on the eve of the 24 October demonstrations, a racist criminal, animated by the Islamophobic slogans of the Rassemblement national (RN) and the rest of the right and far right, wanted to commit a mass crime in Trappes, a working-class town in Yvelines, in the Paris suburbs. This murderer carried out several shootings with a submachine gun and managed to kill one man, Pengo Bossio Wangi, a 26-year-old black Frenchman, and to wound (…)

Sotsialnyi Rukh (Social Movement) Ukraine

Ukraine: Sotsialnyi Rukh sets out a democratic reform programme for the Security Service

Sotsialnyi Rukh (Social Movement) Ukraine

Sotsialnyi Rukh (Social Movement) argues that the Operation Carthage disclosures of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), created in 2015 to investigate high-level corruption, reveal the subordination of whole security agencies to private criminal interests rather than isolated abuses. The statement singles out the Department for the Protection of National Statehood of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the state security agency accountable to the President, which it (…)

India: young women connect sexual violence, voter-roll revision and Hindutva misogyny

ASLESHA Divya, MINJ Nolina

Since July 2026, young women have been at the forefront of street protests in India's capital: first against leaked entrance-examination papers, then against a spate of rapes in Delhi, and from October against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls and the Election Commission that conducts it. Police met these protests with detentions, beatings and sexual assault, recorded on video and denounced by women's organisations. Nolina Minj and Divya Aslesha interviewed women (…)

COLLONGES Elsa, LARRACHE Antoine
