On 23 August 1940, two days after Leon Trotsky died from the ice axe wound inflicted by NKVD agent Ramón Mercader, *Pravda* published an unsigned article titled “Death of an International Spy.” The typescript, preserved in the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History and first published in a 2006 documentary collection, bears Stalin's final round of handwritten corrections.
